'Dear Bob' - Annie Porthouse

Post by Leona123 on Thu Jun 11, 2015 9:03 am

'Dear Bob' by Annie Porthouse is a Christian fiction book for older teenagers to early 20s types and follows the diary entries of Jude who's just started at university and trying to find her feet in a world of lectures, adventures, and boys!
It's like Bridget Jones' Diary, but for Christian Union members Razz
I loved it because it's one of the few 'real life' youth fiction books out there that a) isn't American and b) isn't overly cheesy
Instead it just follows the highs and lows of life like your own diary would be at that age (if you had the time and patience to write one!) so it has all the struggles of love; the days you dont tell anyone about when you just want to sit at home and sulk and accidentally eat a full tube of Pringles; and when you're suddenly out of the comfort of your church and into University life in general and a Christian Union where all of your peers are from different denominations and have beliefs that although are still from the Bible are also entirely different from yours.
It's that whole identity struggle not just with who you are and what you're going to be as a fully fledged adult, but your identity within your beliefs and faith as well.
Annie Porthouse did a follow up book to this one called 'Love Jude' which was also great... and then I don't think she wrote anything else after that, which is a real shame.
Anyway, I loved the two books and would recommend them to anyone making to college to uni jump :-)

No way!
I LOVED this book.
It was one of the first Christian books I ever read. I became a Christian a few months before going to uni, and found that there was a particular charity shop on the small high street in the part of town where most students lived that nearly always had Christian books on their shelves. Came across 'Dear Bob' there and loved it so much i think i read it in the space of a day or two then immediately bought the second book online.
Such a great novel, and you're right - not cheesy American, but typical quirky British teenagery.

'Dear Bob' and 'Love Jude' were great novels, and bestsellers back in the day. As far as we know they're now out of print unless you buy direct from Annie's website, which is a shame as we think they're great books too!
Great reminder, Leona! Thanks for leaving as a review of such brilliant youth fiction.

Thank you so much for reminding me of this great series. I loved these books so much as a teen.
Such a shame it's out of print now, but I found you can still order them on Annie's website.
£4 per book (inc postage) or £7 for both (inc postage)
so i've just put an order on for the set to re-live uni nights spent sat reading them rather than doing my essays Razz
...might even get some SC&O Pringles too Wink

Great find!
It's worth checking out her website, as well as being able to order the books direct from Annie (without going to Amazon for out of print copies), there's also some brilliant behind the scenes info about the books AND some study ('stuh-dee') material on there for teens exploring their faith and doubts.

That's so cool! So glad I stopped to open the reply notification to this in my inbox this morning because now I know you can still get copies (and direct too - I really don't like Amazon), it means I can do what holly313 is doing and re-live the magic. What a great start to the day!
Gonna add them to my Birthday List :-)

What a brilliant idea Leona123!
We were considering starting up some form of group reading events on the forum, but given there's such an eclectic group of members on here at the moment we were struggling to find a title that would appeal to all of you so early in the forum's lifespan.
But this sounds like a brilliant suggestion for a Book Club title to start off with in the Youth Zone! study Smile

We could actually set up a virtual reading 'event' for this if you wanted to.
